Calibrate Your Screen!

Yep, we had that topic before, i.e. using the tools provided by operating system, see post here.
Of course, this is just a start. Despite those methods work pretty well concerning the gamma calibration of your screen, getting the gamut (color space) and white balance right is near impossible.
However, if your are serious about your photography, I actually want to work with a screen that displays colors as good as possible. Right, when doing B&W only, this is probably not of your concern.

Available gadgets
There are a couple of different gadgets on the market, which help you calibrating your screen.  For convenience, i.e. my local photo store, to which I can cycle in just about 10min, had a Datacolor Spyder4Express, which I obtained for a little less than €90. In fact, the Spyder4Express actually does the calibration for me, fully automatically.

Problems may occur!
Sounds all brilliant and easy, but, you will be disappointed at first. You may even consider returning the device claiming warranty for a defective unit. To prevent you from arriving at such considerations, I would like to share a few experiences I had with the device. I will also try to explain a little bit why things happen, when they happen. Although those experiences are based on the Datacolor Spyder4, other devices of similar nature may show similar effects.

Position on the screen
The Spyder4 is supposed to sit snug on you screens surface, so that no light can fall onto its dedicated color sensors. To allow for this position, a counterweight is fit on the USB cord. This weight can be repositioned along the cable.
  • Try to slowly track it into the position which fits your screen best. Apply minimum force possible, after all, you don't want to rip the USB cable apart.
Angle of the screen
In the good old times, monitors were big chunks of roundish glass, making in easy for whatever one dangles in front of it, to make good contact with the bulgy glass surface. However, those days are gone, and so are the rounded surfaces of computer monitors. Today, one owns a very flat bit of (mostly) plastic surface, which sits recessed in a frame of more plastic. Meaning, that in a normal operating position, a device, such as the Spyder4, will not be able to touch the surface in the intended manner.
  • Tilt your screen upwards, as far as needed (or a little more). This allow the color calibration gadget to actually reach the screen's surface.
Stray light
Datacolor, and other probably too, warns about light falling directly onto the screen during calibration. While this is a nice move, it seems to rather pointing back in time, when the display light was actually generated by a beam of electrons hitting a phosphorous layer at the inner surface of the goldfish bowl. We came to the conclusion that those days are over, right?
So, what is wrong with the advice? It is by far insufficient to not point a light source onto the screen during calibration.
Here is why: modern displays employ light guides, to guide white light (from the screen's light source) to individual cells containing liquid crystal materials. Although not intended to, some minimal amount of ambient light may be collected by the monitors surface, to be re-emitted through the screen, interfering with the calibration run. This actually happened to my. Different color if indirect ambient light resulted in different calibrations.
  • Darken the room in which you calibrate your monitor before doing so!
Green cast
This is reported on the interwebs, and it hit me too. I figure, the problem is caused by 2 factors: 1) ambient light interference and 2) angle of view when using the screen.
Concerning the first point, see the stray light problem. Now imagine that you calibrate your screen in your study, normal dim lights around you, e.g. incandescent bulbs... this is warm light, the calibration process pics up traces of that light an corrects for by shifting towards green.  Try the following: set your digital camera to a white balance for incandescent light and take a photo in bright sunlight... it will be green!
Concerning the second point, the calibrated monitor forces you to stare at it at the angle of calibration. Why is that? In the good old days, having your goldfish bowl on your desk, any individual pixel radiated the same color into any direction, nothing was polarized. Today's screens, however, are entirely based on polarized optics. Polarization is a tricky thing to deal with, hence, I will not go any deeper into the whys and what photons do anyway. Instead I wish to invite you to do a quick experiment: create a white surface on your screen, e.g. by starting a text processor, now look at the screen at various angles from above and below. I am using a relatively inexpensive PHILIPS LC-display, on which I can observe a shift from whit to green, when looking at the screen from below, and a shift from white towards blue/violet, when looking from above. BTW: right-left, on my screen at least, creates a red color cast. Back to the color calibration gadgets, those are designed to measure the emissions of the screen exactly perpendicular to the screen's surface thereby defining the angle in which the screen emits the correct colors.
  • Position your screen such that you look at it at an angle of 90˚.
Observation
It seems that a slight blue cast is more acceptable than a green cast, at least to me that is. Interestingly enough, all calibrations I have done so far seem to shift away from blue. I guess manufacturers want to avoid costumers to complain about greenish displays and therefore shift their color space towards blue.

All in all, I believe everyone working with visual content should calibrate their displays. Consumer level gadget are really inexpensive, seen what can be achieved... definitely worth their money.

Expensive Day

Oh, this was an expensive day, today!

I ordered
  • a Holga lens for my Canons
  • a Lensbaby Spark (for my Canons)
  • Rogue flash bender and filters
What is this stuff all good for, you may ask. Well, the Holga lens, very obviously, will enable me to shoot in a "Lomography-like" style, using the Rebel XT or the EOS M. I very much look forward to doing street photography with the EOS M and some artsy stuff with the EOS 350D (Rebel XT).

The Lensbaby Spark is a fully tactile (manually pushing and pulling) controlled tilt lens, allowing for the focusing place to be all over the place (read sensor). This will be really cool and creative! I figure, but this is to be seen, that this is more for the Rebel XT, rather than the EOS M.

Finally, I always wanted to own a snoot and gels for my speedlights. The store offering the artsy stuff above also offered the Rogue stuff... en passant were added to the list.

Light and Bokeh!

I got lucky lately. The action site ebay made me winner on a Cosinon F=1.4 f=55mm M42 lens. There are some options to use that lens:
  • on any of my old M42 film SLR bodies
  • with the bellow-cam astro-webcam
  • on the Rebel XT in manual mode
  • with the EOS M (in manual mode)
You can imagine that I can't wait to receive the lens ;-)

Old Glass on the EOS M

Here is another reason for me having obtained the Canon EOS M.

From my early days in photography, I still own some old lenses, mainly M42. Of course they are all manual focus, old skool! Some of those lenses made amazing photographs. It would be a shame to just let them rot in a corner.

Of course, the most obvious choice would be to buy Canon's EF-M to EF-S adapter, making available to the EOS M all Canon AF lenses. And with some additional adapter(s), lenses with all sorts of different mounts. However, Canon's adapter is rather expensive, especially when considering fully manual lenses only (no electrical connections required).

There are some makers/vendors of after market adapters, in particular from China, which offer purely mechanical adapters of decent quality. The price for those are really low, so I gave it a try and ordered  "EF-M to EF-S" and "EF-S to M42" adapters. (to find them: google, ebay, youtube, etc.)

First impression on the rings from China. Machining is very precise and the quality appears solid. Mounting the "EF-M to EF-S" ring of the EOS M shows a feature I am not so happy about, nevertheless can live with. The EOS M's locking mechanism goes "click", but there is no mating means in the adapter ring, hence, the ring can be turned further, with just a little force. Maybe hole for the locking pin is too small.

The "M42 to EF-S" ring clicks in place just fine, no issues here.

For the fun of it, I mounted a 35mm f/2.8 lens, which could be a very good lens for street-photography.

Here come the critical bit connecting the old to the new world:
  • Set your lens to manual, so that the iris acts according to your settings ignoring the SLR-command pin.
  • In your EOS M, set the Custom Function item 7 "Release Shutter w/o Lens" to "Enable", so that the camera ignores the fact that it can't sense a (high tech) lens.
  • Put your EOS M in either "Av" or "M" mode.
  • You may want to choose MF (manual focus), although I am not sure if that makes any difference.

In "Av", life is nearly as easy as with a stock lens. Choose your aperture at the lens' aperture ring, focus and shoot. The shutter (and ISO w/ ISO on auto) will be determined by the camera. Of course, if you are old skool (like me), you will set your ISO yourself... At least to my time, there was not "auto film", the only option I had was taking a body with a certain spool inserted to choose an ISO sensitivity, usually either 50 or 400... As I said, old skool!


In "M", life is what it used to be, 30 years ago.
  • Select the ISO suitable for the situation, please do not use auto-ISO!
  • Decide on a shutter speed according to the task.
  • Adjust the aperture while taking meter readings by half-pressing the shutter button.

And here you have it, this is why I think the Canon EOS M is one of the best mirrorless cameras to buy at the moment:
  • It has a poor reputation for slow AF speeds...  who cares when manually focusing old lenses?! For that reason, the price for this camera is pretty low presently!
  • After market adapters are cheaply available.
  • The EOS M is customizable by the Magic Lantern software (*).  

All in all, now that all my parts are in, I hope to be able to do what this camera was intended to in my house: Astro-Photography. First attempts using the 22mm prime lens, see earlier post, were promising.
Manually focusing the EF-M STM lenses proved difficult.
However, now that pure mechanical focusing is possible, using legacy lenses, there is light at the end of the tunnel, literally. In particular since I envisage to use the adapter ring to mount the camera to my T2 equipped telescopes.

(*) For astro-photography, ML promises to replace a setup of a dedicated computer wired up to the imaging camera, i.e. by taking timed bulb exposures.

Going Wireless

Urgh?! Correct blog? Wireless, should that not be on "draaggolf"?
Well, no, not this time, although the stuff I am about to write about is actually operating in the 13cm band (2.4GHz that is).

First of all, I am not a great strobist yet. I believe in constant improvement by continuous challenges. Hence, flash-photography is one of my next fields to experiment in.
Actually, I did a bit of experimenting, very little, using one on-camera flash and one off-camera flash in servo mode. This experience was interesting enough to get me buying RF-triggers.

The model I went for finally were the Wansen WS-603 transceivers. Some decent review on the interweb and a very decent price pulled me over. For about €20.- a pair of transceivers landed in my mailbox today.
Considering the price, I might actually order a second pair. Having 3 speedlites (yep, that's how Canon call those things... and I am using Canon), this would make my set complete to illuminate with key-, fill- and hair-light. Yes, I know, for portraits indoors, I would be fine with 1 radio trigger and servo triggered flashguns, but what the hack, just €20.- for the pair of transceivers!

Why do I actually underline the transceiver aspect of the devices? Well, easy, with a transceiver, the camera gets feedback from the flashgun, as it was sitting on the camera. This helps for modern features such as ETTL (Exposure Through The Lens) or remotely adjusting the power setting of the flash in manual mode.

Yet Another Bag

Of course, with the new camera, an additional bag is needed. One that is small enough, yet big enough for the camera. Originally, I had the Lowepro Even Messenger 100 in mind. However, it was not on stock in my store. The Event Messenger 150 was clearly by far to big...

Finally, I decided to gamble and bought the StreamLine 100, which gave the impression of being somewhat on the smaller side, maybe even too small. As you see on Lowe's web-page, the bag is divided into 2 compartments by a Velcro attached separator. This separator has got 2 little pockets itself, one for memory cards and one which houses a microfiber cloth.

Very much to my surprise, the EOS M fits nicely in the bag, with either of the lenses, 22mm prime or 18-55mm zoom, fitted. The lose lens and the 90EX speedlite will find enough space to fit into the second compartment.

Stowing the camera with the 22mm prime is really simple, just through it in!

With the zoom lens fitted, thing get a bit more difficult. The best way for me is putting the camera into the bag with the display facing downwardly.

Very unfortunately, there is no elegant way storing a spare battery other than the zip-locked outside pockets.

Obvious downside of the the StreamLine 100: there is not protection against rain.

New Bag

My pleasure in photography is pretty much based on the fact, that for certain types of photography, you will be outside. Be it architecture, street or landscape photography, even sports will pull you outside most of the time.
However, there is a problem. How to carry the gear w/o being noticed? I struggled a while buying a bag, since most of the design are kinda pretty much in your face photo-stuff. This I don't want for myself.

Finally, I found a relatively inconspicuous bag by Lowe, the Passport Sling II. The bag, being a little bit asymmetric, gives the looks of being just one of those up-to-date day-pack replacements. To me, that was a perfect option to covertly carry a camera.

Interestingly enough, I when I bought the bag, I was hoping for this, the asymmetric shape of the bag allows for a small tripod to be inserted.
"As small tripod..." I hear you saying, "... what is that good for?" Well, sometimes, size does not matter. Actually, my "small" tripod is a GorillaPod SLR-Zoom; I figure that even the beefiest of the models, the Focus, will fit in the bag.

Are there downsides to the bag? Yes, there are!
- The lower half of the inner bag is essentially made from liner material. It would have been nice if Cordura-like outer material would have been used for the entire inner bag. (More seams = more problems, in particular in weaker material)
- There are 2 little compartments, inside the inner bag, which have a Velcro latch. Those compartments look pretty useless... I would have wished for a single bigger compartment with a zipper, e.g. for keeping additional SD-cards and batteries from falling out.

All in all, it is the bag I was looking for. I hope it is able to serve me for a while.
